Flagship West Midlands engineering centre increases capacity

Leading industrial maintenance, service and repair group, Deritend Industries, is increasing the levels of skilled staff and engineering repair work carried out at Deritend RMB, the company’s state-of-the-art engineering works in West Bromwich. The move comes as the company outgrows its older Birmingham branch site and also expands its Ashby-based Site Services business.

Commenting on the improvements to the company’s UK wide engineering service infrastructure, Group MD Richard K Hale states, ‘Increasing the capacity of the most efficient workshop resources within the group has always been a fundamental step in our business strategy, and has added to our ability to deliver cost effective engineering solutions to industry, nationwide. I am pleased to see areas of the business such as site services enjoying substantial growth and also to be able to implement the planned rationalisation of the older workshops in the West Midlands area’.

Adrian Larmour, The General Manager of Deritend’s Birmingham business adds, ‘We are pleased to have full use of the new, larger capacity workshop facilities at Deritend RMB, the original Birmingham branch building has reached the end of it’s lease period, and was just seven miles down the road, which is great for the staff that are moving over, and ensures complete continuity for our local customer base.’

Although the moves are local, they improve operational efficiency and are part of the long-term strategy set down by the management team to realise the engineering capacity at the new Deritend RMB workshop, which was purpose-built to handle this type of work. Customers will benefit from a wider range of services from what was the Birmingham branch, including a much higher weight carrying capacity at the workshop, due to higher load craneage, a more flexible workspace, and access to specialist machine building and fabrication expertise.

Operations Director, Alex Meiklejohn adds, ‘The Deritend RMB workshops are far better suited to this type of business, and as the demand for new replacement equipment continues to grow, we are changing both our local stock profiles and the type of work our installation teams are carrying out. The improvements to our business structure will also ensure that we retain our staff wherever possible and increase operational efficiency, which is an essential and ongoing task in order for any business to remain healthy.’

The extremely successful Deritend Site Services business, based at the Ashby de la Zouch branch, is also increasing its capacity; the Site Services business unit is focussed on providing electro-mechanical equipment supply, repair, maintenance and installation services to the water and power sectors, and is expanding to fill the entire workshop premises at Ashby.

Previously one of the fourteen Deritend nationwide repair centres, the engineering capacity profile at Ashby was a duplication of other centrally-located workshops, and so work is being moved to other sites in order to offer more specialisation at the Ashby site. The expansion is inline with the company’s business strategy, and is attributed to extensive framework contracts won within the power and utilities markets.
